The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Total Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for the Spanish giants, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid history in a key European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a quarter-final place.

At 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He signed for Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time in pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," said Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with great stamina, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to represent both nations at the highest level.

Under international regulations, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official full international.

He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the two-one win at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the club chase future success.

Following his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the field," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
