Extraordinary striker Erling Haaland earns a crack at his premier global event next summer, after leading Norway to the World Cup.

Additionally, the 25-year-old Manchester City striker did it in outstanding performance, registering 16 goals in eight World Cup qualifying matches - finding the back of the net consistently in all those encounters.

This establishes him as the highest scorer in 2026 World Cup qualifying in any continent.

Moreover, his country's 4-1 win versus Italy on Sunday, where Haaland scored twice, means they will be participating in next summer's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The striker commented post-game: "I'm delighted, but more relieved. There's a lot of pressure and stuff, and I experience it. But it's enjoyable."

This represents merely their fourth World Cup, and their initial international competition since the 2000 Euros.

How Important Did Haaland Play?

Haaland's goalscoring record for Norway is truly extraordinary.

He has hit 55 goals in 48 matches for the national team.

Furthermore he is just the sixth footballer ever, and the premier in half a century, to net 50 strikes in under 50 international games.

The nation's former top scorer was Juve with 33 strikes, who kept that distinction for nine decades.

In these qualifiers he scored 16 goals - in eight matches - plus two goal contributions.

That is double the goals tally any competitor has registered in European qualifying.

He is the leading goalscorer in these preliminary games in every region, even in regions where teams play twice as more games.

Beyond a full year has gone by since Haaland last failed to score in a international appearance.

Squad Contribution Alongside Haaland

But it is not just a one-man show.

Team leader Martin Odegaard, 26, has more assists than any competitor in UEFA qualification - seven.

The London club's midfielder has played 67 times for Norway since his initial cap at the tender age of fifteen.

"Combine Haaland's success with the reality that in this period we furthermore feature Martin Odegaard," commented a football expert.

We're a country of five million inhabitants and we feature both the best striker and I'd propose the best playmaker, certainly one of the premier midfielders, in the Premier League.

Historical Importance of World Cup Spot

For the premier occasion in decades Norway fans will experience the joy of supporting their team at an international tournament.

The Scandinavian country featured in the World Cups in 1998, 1994 and 1938, and Euro 2000.

His father, Alf Inge Haaland, participated in the 1994 tournament.

Erling has previously said surpassing his dad represented a big career ambition for him.

"Norway will never win the World Cup," the striker mentioned to an international magazine recently.

Escaping Historical Omission

Three Ballon d'Or winners didn't succeed to participate in the global tournament.

The Liberian legend, who secured titles with multiple European clubs, featured for Liberia - who have never reached a World Cup.

Famous United forward George Best, viewed by plenty as one of football's greatest players, was a Ulster footballer during the 1960s and 70s when they did not qualify.

Madrid superstar the footballing pioneer played for three national teams - Argentina, Colombia and Spain - but couldn't reach a World Cup with any national team.
