The Owls Suffer Points Penalty Following Entering Administration

Sheffield Wednesday fans described Wednesday as “one of the most bittersweet days in our 158-year history” after the Championship side was placed into administration under owner Dejphon Chansiri with a 12-point penalty imposed.

Club Crisis Results in Points Penalty

The Owls are confronted with almost certain relegation after the league's punishment left them on -6 points, 15 points from safety. Team members and employees have not been paid on time over recent months, compounding the club's instability.

Administrator Begbies Traynor have taken control of the process aiming to sell club assets, including the team's home ground, to recoup debts including tax liabilities. Shortly after the administration announcement, stadium seating with the owner's name were removed from the North Stand.

“Administration resulted from prolonged financial issues, a lack of accountability, and unsuccessful sale attempts,” the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust said. “This isn't a moment for celebration. It could have been avoided. But we are overjoyed to have Dejphon Chansiri out of our club for good

Manager’s Perspective on Fresh Start

Wednesday’s manager, Henrik Pedersen held talks with administrators with team members and employees on Friday morning. The Dane said administration was required to embark on a new era.

Pedersen stressed “while difficult, this marks a positive turning point”, noting: “We knew from the last five, six, seven, eight months it cannot continue. We need a fresh restart to use the potential of this fantastic club. Now optimism and hope for brighter days prevail. I envision a promising future for the club.”

Staff Insecurity

Club staff were emotional at the news, with Pedersen saying: “Uncertainty exists. Do we get our salary now? What happens now? Will things improve? Will it not be better? The general feeling was that they are all looking forward to the future together with Sheffield Wednesday

Continuing Money Problems

The situation at Wednesday has been deteriorating sharply in recent months after the former manager and players left due to salary delays. The league voiced worries regarding financial health earlier this season.

Since then, Wednesday operated with minimal funds, applying all revenue including league payments to address liabilities. Facing potential closure orders from HMRC, the owner exhausted alternatives.

Administrator’s Statement

A lead administrator, Kris Wigfield from the insolvency firm stated: “Like many football clubs, [Wednesday] has been trading at a significant loss over multiple seasons, previously covered by the owner. Because of mounting money troubles, the owner opted for administration allowing us to sell the club and ground as a whole, a positive development for fans.”

Government Reaction

The culture secretary, Lisa Nandy commented on the situation highlighted again the importance of a football regulator, which was signed into law this year. It should be active for the start of the 2027-28 season.

“Having been in this position with my own team, Wigan Athletic, I know everyone who loves the club will be hoping for a resolution as soon as possible,” Nandy said.

Fan Response

Wednesday fans have boycotted the club’s retail and merchandise this season with many absent during the Middlesbrough match in the latest boycott. Ahead of the Oxford game, officials urged fans to return.

“The club’s most urgent need is stability and income, the trust said. Protest succeeded; rebuilding starts today. Every ticket bought, every shirt worn, every pie and pint enjoyed in Hillsborough helps the club rebuild. Real change is within our grasp – but only if we are prepared to seize it. It's time to back the team.”

Future Prospects

The trust anticipates buyer interest while developing a “fan-led takeover proposal” guaranteeing “liquidation remains off the table”.

The manager, once an assistant, said he was not resigned to relegation despite the severity of the challenge. “We must modernize while honoring tradition, he stated. We have a fantastic club and it deserves to grow. I'm confident we can stay up. We will keep fighting
