The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman containing multiple personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, while additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to each person."

The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
