Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Departs Following Shift Towards Fried Chicken.

A head of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the United Kingdom might have hit peak pizza while diversifying the franchise into chicken products has been ousted after disagreements with its governing body.

Leadership Transition

Andrew Rennie is leaving after just two years in the top role, and will be replaced on an acting basis by the company's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a long-term chief.

Rennie, who was with the company for over 20 years, had sought to pivot Britain's largest pizza delivery company towards chicken offerings, remarking earlier this month there was not “massive growth” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He noted poultry was the fastest-growing food category in the globe.

Board Tensions

Reports indicate that there was friction between the CEO and the board over his strategy and management style, although Domino's announcement said he was leaving “as a joint decision”.

New Product Introduction

In September, the chain launched its Chick 'N' Dip brand – which the former chief referred to as a “bold new chapter” for the group – and is trialling it in over 200 locations in the North West region and Northern Ireland.

While the company is still intending to launch it across its almost 1,400 stores next year as planned, it regards chicken products as complementary to its core pizza business.

Leadership Comment

The Domino's chair, the Domino's chair, commented: “We are confident that there are a series of prospects to boost expansion and performance improvement in Domino's core business. We are prioritizing selecting the ideal CEO to oversee the disciplined execution of that development approach.”

Market Difficulties

Recently, Domino's, which has millions of users in the British Isles, said sales dipped by 1.5 percent in the latest quarter. In the summer, it cautioned that the food delivery sector had “intensified” as it blamed economic uncertainty in the lead-up to the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for disappointing revenue and a 15% drop in half-year profits.

Rival chains are also facing challenges. Another major chain disclosed the closure of dozens of outlets a recently, after the firm behind its British operations faced financial collapse.

Health Efforts

Trying to keep up with market shifts towards balanced diets, Domino's has launched light products, such as its thin-crust selection of bakes below 400 kcal as well as vegan and gluten-free options. A big pepperoni bake has 2,311 calories. A big margherita has 2,171, while a personal has under 1,000 calories.

Acting Leadership

The interim chief has been with the company since the recent past, and had a background at the gaming group a well-known operator. It is understood that she does not want to take on the chief executive role long-term.

Frampton stated: “The company has a several active expansion and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to implementing at a rapid rate.”

Frampton noted these involved additional efforts on the company's logistics network and menu innovation, and its customer retention initiative.

The pizza chain is also in need of a long-term finance director until 16 March, when a new appointee comes aboard from the beverage producer a well-known firm. In the meantime, Snow serves as temporary CFO.
