Massive Upheaval Ahead: Britain's Most Severe Climate Emergency Scenarios Revealed by Scientists

The gravest potential impacts of the climate emergency for the UK have been outlined by researchers, including a scorching 4C jump in average temperatures to a 6.5-foot surge in sea level. An alternative projection envisions a plunge of 6C in temperature following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt farming and power requirements.

Possible Outcomes, Not Predictions

These consequences, some of which are linked to critical climate thresholds, are viewed as low probability but possible. The team said that these scenarios filled a gap in risk assessment that had rendered the UK not ready for catastrophic possibilities.

"The worst-case scenarios we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are credible," stated Nigel Arnell who directed the study. "The nation has been making preparations in the absence of the frameworks to test against extreme possibilities. We've now supplied planners what they need to prepare for future conditions they pray never occur, but dare not dismiss."

A Spectrum of Severe Conditions Scenarios

Another collection of worst-case scenarios maps the projected severity of severe conditions between now and the year 2100. These indicate that temperatures could soar in some months by up to 6C above historical levels, while precipitation could be triple normal levels.

The likelihood of the catastrophic events occurring remains uncertain due to a lack of certainty about what steps will be taken to combat global heating and how the climate system will react. This research was likened to defence planning or resilience checks for economic stability.

Key Outcome Details

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Worldwide averages exceeding 4C by 2100 could transpire if climate action fails or if powerful amplifying effects like the tropical forests perishing emit its enormous store of carbon. This would result in severe and lengthy heat domes and dry spells plaguing the UK in summer.
  • Ocean Circulation Failure: A critical sea current, the AMOC, is slowing down and showing signs of collapse due to climate change. A full shutdown beginning in 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Agriculture would face immense difficulties and water supplies would be completely altered," noted Arnell.
  • Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if glaciers in the Arctic and Antarctic disintegrate quickly, inundating seaside communities. Differing from the other scenarios, this threat is already recognized by planners.
  • Clean Air Warming: Temperatures could also be driven up by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is sharply cut. This counterintuitive effect occurs because aerosol particles from burning coal scatter solar radiation from warming the ground.

Planning for the Unthinkable

The worst-case scenarios could be used to inform the building of major projects, for example new towns, power generation facilities and water management networks. Understanding these climate risks could also hasten the push to cut fossil fuel emissions.

The research developed the extreme models using a combination of real-world events, computer simulations and climate physics. These outcomes do not take into account international cascading effects like the devastation of food supplies and geopolitical instability.

This work was requested as part of a national adaptation planning initiative. Earlier reports have warned that not enough attention was being allocated to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.

Official experts has stated that the UK must "adapt to 2C" and assess the threats for severe warming. Previous adaptation plans have been criticised as being "very weak" by certain experts.

A national response said: "The climate emergency is at the core of our national priorities, both adapting for the future and becoming a clean energy superpower. It is crucial that the UK is prepared for the effects."
