Larry Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
Summers declared he would step back from public duties after House committee made public his repeated messages with the financier

One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just days after a batch of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

Summers commented in a statement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have participated, enthusiastic about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await observing their progress".

Summers, who formerly presided over Harvard University, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his relationship with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The newly public messages showed that the economist communicated with the financier until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for suspected sex trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted the economist's decision to depart.

"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the insight he offered to the directors," OpenAI remarked.

Political Context

This announcement comes after the two houses of the US legislature decided on this week to pass a measure that would compel the US justice department to disclose its files on Epstein.

The measure will afterward head to the administration of President Trump for endorsement. The President has indicated he intends to sign the measure, after modifying his position on the issue following objections from his base.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of financier-linked correspondence made public by the Congressional committee last week referenced numerous high-profile figures in the Epstein's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The emails showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often trying to introduce the official to notable global figures.

Personal Response

After the emails were shared with the wider community, Summers said he took "full responsibility for my ill-advised decision to continue communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he desired "to reestablish faith and fix bonds with the people most important to me".

Previous Positions

The professor occupied high-level positions under Democratic administrations; acting as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He presided over Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a academic there. When announcing his withdrawal from public roles previously on this week, he said he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal policy institute in DC where the professor was a researcher, confirmed that he was ceased to be associated with the group.

The former official entered the directorate of the technology firm, which develops the language model, in the previous year - following a defeated move to oust its top executive OpenAI's head.
