In excess of 60,000 Run from Sudanese City In the wake of Capture by RSF Paramilitary Group, UN Reports

Per the United Nations refugee organization, more than 60,000 individuals have fled the Sudanese city of el-Fasher, which was taken over by the paramilitary RSF recently.

Accounts suggest summary killings and human rights violations as paramilitary forces stormed the city after an year-and-a-half siege characterized by starvation and intense shelling.

The flow of those fleeing the violence towards the town of Tawila, approximately 80km (50 miles) west of el-Fasher, had grown in the last several days, per United Nations refugee agency spokesperson.

Survivors were telling horrendous accounts of atrocities, featuring sexual violence, and the humanitarian group was struggling to secure enough shelter and nourishment for them.

Every child was affected by undernourishment, she commented.

Estimates suggest that over 150,000 individuals are currently stranded in el-Fasher, which had been the army's remaining stronghold in the western part of Darfur.

The Rapid Support Forces has disputed widespread accusations that the deaths in el-Fasher are based on ethnic factors and follow a trend of the Arab paramilitaries targeting non-Arab communities.

Nevertheless the RSF has custodied one of its fighters, Abu Lulu, who has been charged with summary executions.

The group shared video revealing the militiaman's apprehension subsequent to verification that he was responsible for the execution of several non-combatants near el-Fasher.

Digital platform has confirmed that it has removed the profile linked to Lulu. It is not clear whether he had operated the profile in his name.

Sudan was plunged into a civil war in April 2023 when a intense struggle for power broke out between its army and the RSF.

The conflict has led to a starvation emergency and accusations of mass killing in the western Sudan.

Over 150,000 individuals have lost their lives in the fighting around the country, and roughly 12 million have abandoned their residences in what the UN has termed the most extensive humanitarian crisis.

The capture of el-Fasher strengthens the territorial division in the country, with the RSF now in control of western Sudan and significant areas of bordering Kordofan to the southern area, and the military controlling the main city, Khartoum, central and eastern regions along the coastal region.

The opposing sides had been partners - coming to power together in a seizure of power in 2021 - but disagreed over an internationally backed proposal to move towards civilian leadership.
