Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and no fewer than 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.
The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews approached the property close to Verona to carry out an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.
The three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.
A man and a woman were arrested at the site and one more individual who fled subsequent to the blast was found not long after. All three have been admitted to hospital.
The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the scene showed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.
The leader of the Veneto area, President Zaia, explained the residence was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.
Negotiators had been assigned to engage the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents caused the detonation.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.
A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our members,” he said.
Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the minister confirmed.
The wounded by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.
As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.
The prosecutor was convinced the blast had occurred on a floor above the doorway and informed reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being opened”.
“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told reporters, adding that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the three men who had been killed in the line of duty.
