Far-Right Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile's New Leader.

After a definitive runoff election, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.

A Clear-Cut Win

After more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having in the past been beaten by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.

Platform Centered On Law and Order and Immigration

Known for his staunch socially conservative views and praise for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was primarily centered on promises to tackle growing violence and significantly restrict immigration.

He frequently pointed to immigrants, especially the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the race, he gave an stern warning for them to exit before the new term begins or face expulsion.

His proposals included controversial measures such as erecting detention centers, border walls, perimeter fencing, and increasing the military presence on the northernmost border.

Within a Continental Wave

Many commentators view Kast's win as fitting into a larger right-wing shift in South America, coming after this year's political outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Nevertheless, other experts also frame it as a continuation of the predictable rotation of power between left and right leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.

Ruling Lacking a Strong Mandate

Despite his clear electoral triumph, Kast does not have an absolute majority in the legislature, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if all rightwing parties are counted together.

This political situation may challenge his plans, such as a vow to cut public spending by billions within 18 months—a plan for which he has not offered a clear explanation.

"There are several questions about how a Kast administration will be that remain unclear because he has not explained the way he will achieve them," said a political professor.

The professor continued, "In terms of economic policy, it is very likely we will see spending cuts common for the right. But where there is far less uncertainty is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse across the race."
