Eurovision Was Once a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

A new initialism surfaced a few months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is unique to Gaza, according to doctors such as child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for medical staff to care for a child who has lost their whole family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors returning from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth Despite a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs contend that genocidal acts are continuing. Officials rejects these claims, just as it refutes everything it is charged with. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, even though several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, it seems, is what unity resembles.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that global media are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of someone in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it was formerly known for. A competition that was originally built on peace has transformed into a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
