Extreme heat and raging wildfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures forecast to continue soaring above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe heatwave warning has been declared across a large portion of the southwestern region.

Broad Extreme Heat Alerts Throughout Multiple States

These conditions follow this month's fires in another state, which caused the loss of properties and fatalities. Intense heatwave warnings have also been issued for the coming days in parts of SA and NSW, as a ridge of high pressure shifts eastward, delivering blazing heat to a broad swath of the area.

The combination of extremely dry land and unbroken high temperatures creates a volatile scenario for emergency crews.

Worldwide Weather Extremes Cause Disruption

In another part of the world, a metropolis was plunged into blackout recently after strong winds damaged the city’s power grid, with toppled trees bringing down electricity cables. The stormy weather also led to major travel disruption at a major airport, where hundreds of flights were cancelled. Severe impact on electrical infrastructure is expected to create ongoing problems as service providers scramble to reconnect electricity to over 1 million residents.

Atypical Mist Blankets Sunny Area

Meanwhile, a region famed for its clear skies and plentiful sunlight has experienced one of its grayest and foggiest periods on recorded history. A specific type of low cloud, which typically lasts for only a few days, has been remarkably widespread and long-lasting this year, keeping temperatures at a major airport under 8C for over a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The prolonged haze has been driven by unprecedented autumn rainfall that left the ground waterlogged.

Severe Weather Delivers Snow to Holiday Islands

And in Spain, a powerful storm has ushered in heavy rainfall, powerful winds and even snow to a set of islands – weather many would not associate with this favored holiday destination. While wintry precipitation is not unheard of at elevated areas, the system brought some of the heaviest accumulations since 2016 to a protected area, forcing its temporary shutdown.

Alongside the snowfall, strong northerly winds buffeted the archipelago, with gusts reaching 50mph observed on several locations. The effect of the weather event is forecast to diminish this week with more seasonal conditions returning.
