At least 64 civilians died in a security raid against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's history.

Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. Over 80 suspects were arrested.

Fierce clashes commenced when around 2,500 police forces moved in on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho countered with gunfire, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, authorities stated.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Raid Aftermath

The slum neighborhoods close to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the headquarters of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.

Local authorities stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Dozens of people were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Community members have likened the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.

Rio's police stated more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the raid, together with multiple guns.
